freeze frame...

Last night Heather Menzies (Louisa) and I headed to the opening reception of an exhibit at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, called "Freeze Frame: 5 Decades of Photographs by Douglas Kirkland." The renowned photographer had taken this photograph above of us in Salzburg, Austria while we were filming "The Sound of Music." At our mini reunion there was also Charmian Carr (Leisl) and Kym Karath (Gretyl) posing here with Douglas Kirkland.

Here we are at the premier of The Sound of Music...we haven't changed that much have we?

The exhibit is really fantastic with 125 color and black and white photographs by Kirkland that represent a literal 'who's-who' of the film world in the last half-century. It showcases images of such classic and current screen stars as Audrey Hepburn, Robert Redford, Julie Christie, and the list goes on and on. Well worth seeing, it opens today, January 18th in the Academy's Grand Lobby Gallery, 8949 Wilshire Blvd. Beverly Hills. Admission is free.

As an added bonus, on the Academy's fourth floor is another exhibit "Casting A Shadow - Creating the Alfred Hitchcock Film." My sister Veronica played 'Cathy' in this Hitchcock classic and there are film clips, sketches and photographs from many of Hitchcock's classics...

If you have never seen "The Birds" it is one scary movie...
Here is a picture of my brother Chris when he visited Veronica on the set of "The Birds".
Isn't this a great photograph? I don't know who took it, but it's classic.

All for now...

I have seen that film of Hitchcock three times or more ( I am a fanatic of TCM channel), and always makes me feel the same.
And about the picture of your mini reunion, all of you look really wonderful.

Angela,
The photos take many of us back to a time of innocence growing up with 'The Sound Of Music'!

My family and I LOVE 'The Birds' - we own a copy on DVD :) Kelly Kilmer shared this Hitchcock site with me a while back (thanks again Kelly!)...You can view 'The Birds' and many other Hitchcock films frame by frame. I think you will enjoy it!

Hi Angela!

Spending some time with old friends is a great way to keep your spirits high. I'm glad to see you had a good time and you're right, no one seems to have changed that much! Of course, you look especially beautiful to me in both photographs!
Thanks for sharing the photographs; its the only way someone like myself will ever get to see any of the exhibit. I've watched "The Birds" many times and I always find it very suspensful. My favorite scene is when the ravens begin to collect outside the school. I heard they trained them to do this for the movie; ravens are actually quite smart. We have many ravens here and sometimes I think they are trying to re-enact that scene in my backyard! Of course, in real life, they all just fly away as soon as I open the back door so I could never get a photograph of it.

Thanks again for sharing your experiences on Said & Done. Have a wonderful weekend!

Love from Frank

We just watched "The Birds" a couple of weekends ago! It is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies! Actually, it is about my fourth favorite, after "North by Northwest," "Marnie," and "The Trouble with Harry," all of which we have on DVD. That is a great picture of your brother and Alfred Hitchcock, I really like it!

Love it! Oh my gosh..you "Von Trapp" girls look wonderful! And what I LOVE about you all is that you have aged naturally. Angela, you've always had the cutest "I'm up to something" smile. You've still got it! Lovely!

I've always had the dream to go to Salzburg and I actually might get to go this year!

Angela, Thanks for sharing all these wonderful memories. I love "The Sound of Music" and "The Birds" though they are miles apart in genre. I had a post at New Year's about "The Sound of Music" you can see it here.

What a great read. I loved "The Sound of Music" and "The Birds." I stopped in Bodega Bay with my family a few years ago and drove around to some of the sites where "The Birds" was filmed.

I'll try and get over to see that photography exhibit soon! Thanks for the recommendation!

Well my goodness. I am sitting here in a sort of shock. I have never commented to you before but have long been interested in your art. But, "The Sound of Music"? Angela! I grew up with the most incredible memories of traditionally watching it every year at Easter time with my older sister. We knew every word (dialogue and lyrics) and acted out every scene for weeks after.
Now I have children of my own and cant describe what is means to have my daughter sing those familiar songs as she plays, or decide this dinnertime she will say, "Yes, Mother..yes, Father" the same as (in her words) the wonderful girls from "The Sound of Music". From my grandmother, mother, daughters to myself, four generations of fans, kudos to you for your part in such an amazing and classic piece of cinematic brilliance, and for the inspiring art you continue to create!

Hi Angela - another big fan here! I'm so glad I found your art/blog! And I have to tell you, The Birds is one of my all time fav movies - I went to a Halloween party once as Tippi Hedren - found a dress at Goodwill (the right era) and stuck little birds from the craft store all over my head and shoulders, fake blood dripping, the works!! The sad part was, I had to explain who I was to a couple of people. But I did encourage to get the movie! (and love the pick of your brother with Mr. Hitchcock - that's priceless!)

One summer my mother bribed us with an afternoon at the movies if we got our chores done quickly. The movie? "The Sound of Music". I bet we saw it a dozen times. Every time was as good as the first. It's been years since I last saw it, but the songs are stored firmly in my memory.

I watched "The Birds" on t.v. recently and realized it really is a scary movie. Every trip to Bodega Bay gave me the willies when I was a kid. And we went a lot.

What a wonderful legacy your family has. You've made us sing and scared us silly.

Fantastic writeup! And you ladies have aged gracefully for sure. I grew up watching the Sound of Music here in Singapore and it is still one of my favorite shows. I have the DVD.

Now I am on to visit Salzburg in May. ;) It has been my childhood dream.
