openings in heaven

Dorothy Nell
January 30, 1919 - July 17, 2006
I made this art in memory of my mother-in-law Dorothy Nell. She passed away today July 17, 2006 at 3:30am.
She was kind and sweet and had a fiesty sense of humor. She was a terrific grandmother and a wonderful mother-in-law. We will miss her spirited energy...

Perhaps they are not stars,
but rather openings in heaven
where the love of our lost ones pours through
and shines down upon us
to let us know they are happy.

i love that. is the photo a family member of yours? she's adorable. she kind of has your features. i like to think our loved ones are looking down at us. my mom and i actually believe i'm her mom. she died in nov. of 1973 and i was born aug. 30th, 1974. it had taken 4 years for my mom to have me after my sister. and then her mom died and she was pregnant with me. i like to believe i came back to let my mom know all is ok.

It's amazing how art can soothe the soul. Just the simple act of creating helps us to reaffim life.

This has always brought me comfort:

"I am standing on a sea shore
a ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand a watch her until at length - she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says, "There! She's gone". Gone where? Gone from my sight - that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her; and just at the moment when someone at my side
says, "There, She's gone", there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "There she comes!" And that is dying."

Sending you prayers and good thoughts at this sad time.

I'm so sorry for your family's loss ....... I do empathize with what you, and especially your husband, must be going through. My mother-in-law passed away a few years ago, and then, 3 months later, my father-in-law. Two years ago, I sat holding my dad's hand as he died; it was very, very, difficult, to say the least. Please know that the sadness you now feel will lessen with time, and the love and memories you carry for her in your hearts will always remain and continue to grow with time. Your artwork is beautiful. Sincerely, Jann

I just returned from a vacation to Nashville and Florida. I was out of touch with the internet. I just read your blog and would like to offer deepest sympathy to your family, especially your husband.

What a wonderful tribute you composed to honor your mother-in-law. I'll bet she loved having you as a daughter-in-law!

The sailing ship quotation from Tatteredge is beautiful! I am going to copy it and keep it handy.
It is certainly a reminder that the "ending" we think of as death, is really a beginning for our loved ones.

When someone in my family passes away, I like to think that all of our passed relatives and friends are waiting to greet them. I'll bet there are great reunion celebrations in heaven!
