change is hard...

I'm kinda sad today...I've been helping my sister, Veronica, move to her new house all morning. Loading up her belongings in the big moving vans, sorting through the bits and pieces that didn't make it into boxes, helping to keep her calm amid the flurry of moving men.
13 years my sister has lived next door to me. I'm grateful for that. Some people don't even have their sisters in the same state as they are. But it's still hard that today...she's moving away.
She's not going far...but you still have to get in a car to drive there instead of going through the side gate we had put between our properties. We called ourselves Ethel and Lucy...and now things will be a different...and I'm just kinda bummed out that Ethel is moving to a new place she will call home.

Change is hard...

Change can indeed be very hard, especially as we move along in life. I once read a quote from a website of a friend of yours that has helped me get through a difficult time or two....
"Don't cry because it's over,
Smile because it happened."

Have you been close to your sister all your lives? Were there times when you fought and couldn't stand to be around her? My sister is 4 years older. We're not close. -Amanda Brooks

Hi Angela

I can totally relate to the "change is hard" line in your post. I'm moving very soon myself, and I'm not looking forward to it. I've been here five years and it's the very first home I've owned. So I dread the thoughts of packing everything I love into boxes. It makes me very, very sad.

Say...if you are good at packing boxes, perhaps you'd like to come here to help me?! I'm a big SOM fan, so we could sing all of the songs as we pack! Ha ha!

Take care,

A fellow shutterbug,

Change is *definately* hard! I hated it when my brother moved - thank goodness for email & IM :-)
I love your work - you've got some beautiful pieces on your blog.

Your sister and you look so much alike...both gorgeous! Two peas in a pod. Lucky you to have such a great relationship!

Change is sure hard - but we need change in our lives. Hopefully, you will get a new neighbor next door that you bond with and are happy to have nearby!

I've moved several times. I've lived in my current home for 10 years, and I still drive through my old neighborhood, wishing I still lived by my old neighbors! (Maybe someday you will see your sister cruising around your neighborhood!)

I love that quote that J roberts added in the comments - very uplifting.

Wonderful pictures Angela, and you are right, change is very hard.
My favorite quote that I have on my professional email through my university says:
"How we choose what we do, and how we approach it... will determine whether the sum of our days adds up to a formless blur, or to something resembling a work of art"
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

I send you this because by your shared life with the public, your "sum of days" certainly is a work of art.

You are still "close" with your sister which is the most important part. Let's hope these recent gasoline price increases slow down so that the drive to and from her new house doesn't cost a fortune (just kidding). Can you bike to her house? I recall someone who looked just like you bicycling with siblings in Salzburg over 40 years ago! ;-)

You WALKED to each other's houses next door? In Los Angeles?? There was a funny scene in Steve Martin's movie "LA Story" where someone would go to their neighbor's home by getting into their car, driving just a few feet down the street, and then getting out of their car and going into the neighbor's house!

I've read that the Cartwrights aren't originally from LA, so you'll no doubt be forgiven for your "walking through a gate" idea. (Ha! Best wishes to the wonderful Cartwright sisters!)

You're lucky to call your sister your friend. My sister and I are 10 years and generations apart. Makes me sad sometimes, but maybe if we lived next door we'd be closer...well...closer! We'll be moving soon after 20 years in this house. Hard to think of making somewhere else 'home'.

Thanks for all the well wishes...and sweet thoughts. I was meloncholy, but I'm better now...No doubt your writings were comforting.
We have had like most sisters had our ups and downs...
I remember laughing at that scene in LA Story...
My parents are in town for the weekend to celebrate my Mom's and sisters birthdays...
We just all had a big dinner and I'm pooped...as only family can make you.
Thanks for looking in on my blog and making comments...

It always amazes me when I hear sisters talk about one another with so much love and warmth. My onw sister and I aren't close at all. We grew up as military braets, always away from extended family and I now feel this overwhelming sense of wanting to be near family, but she doesn't. We drifted apart emotionally, and live apart geographically. So, I admire and envy your closeness.

I would like to give credit to photographer Robert Evans who shot these photos of Veronica and me. They appeared in an article for the SUN newspaper which you can access at this link...

Shucks, my sister lives in another country! You should be thankful it is just a wee drive, mine is a 15 hour plane trip! We are not as close as you two and I kinda wished that we were... you're lucky!

Esp. with your SOM siblings, does it feel weird, or is there a bit of jealousy, that you're the only one with both parents still alive? With my friends, I was the only one, and one other, who had parents still married. I think there was a little bit of jealousy. My mom lost both her parents at a young age, her dad at age 22 and her mom at 27. She had a stepdad who just died March 26th, three days after his 89th bday. Although there are ups and downs, I feel so lucky to still have both my parents. I know you are since you always speak so lovingly about them. -Amanda Brooks

I can so relate, 5 yrs ago I left the US to move to canada with my husband, leaving behind my lil sis, Kelly....i miss her everyday, and some days are ok and other days i realize how hard change is.
It's what it is though, it's part of life, and we adjust....kicking and screaming sometimes but we do it.
Mourn for a little while, and then do what we all do....adjust.
(((hugs))))

What a beautiful article and of course the pictures - you both are stunningly beautiful. I can not believe your sister was that girl in Invasion of the Body Snatchers - that movie scared me to death. Yikes!
